Microplastic evacuation in fish is particle size?dependent

چکیده
The pollution of aquatic systems with microplastics (MPs) affects marine and freshwater fish species worldwide. However, little is known about the size-dependent retention time these inert particles. To approach this question, MP particles was examined in two distinct differences gastrointestinal morphology: rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) a true stomach, stomachless common carp (Cyprinus carpio). A special diet developed that contained environmentally relevant concentrations MPs sizes ranging from 20 to 1,000 µm. were exposed three different numbers retained particle determined up 72 hr after administration. results revealed significant between large small trout, which T50 value (time for 50% be evacuated) ranged 12.1 42.7 µm 4.0 1,086 In contrast, observed considerably smaller, 7.3 4.6 It therefore concluded must actively transported out as evacuation times are significantly shorter than those food. Small particles, however, passively excreted chyme. carp, rates all range food, suggesting passive excretion. particularly contexts transfer through food chain, release toxic chemicals, translocation into tissues organs. For reason, it essential size given more consideration future studies environments.

Environmentally relevant concentrations of microplastic particles influence larval fish ecology.
The widespread occurrence and accumulation of plastic waste in the environment have become a growing global concern over the past decade. Although some marine organisms have been shown to ingest plastic, few studies have investigated the ecological effects of plastic waste on animals. Here we show that exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of microplastic polystyrene particles (90...
متن کاملMicroplastic fragments and microbeads in digestive tracts of planktivorous fish from urban coastal waters
We investigated microplastics in the digestive tracts of 64 Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) sampled in Tokyo Bay. Plastic was detected in 49 out of 64 fish (77%), with 2.3 pieces on average and up to 15 pieces per individual. All of the plastics were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Most were polyethylene (52.0%) or polypropylene (43.3%). Most of the plastics were f...
متن کاملThe deep sea is a major sink for microplastic debris
Marine debris, mostly consisting of plastic, is a global problem, negatively impacting wildlife, tourism and shipping. However, despite the durability of plastic, and the exponential increase in its production, monitoring data show limited evidence of concomitant increasing concentrations in marine habitats. There appears to be a considerable proportion of the manufactured plastic that is unacc...
